Herbaceous plants
Herbaceous Plants are perennial plants which completely die back in winter to pop up again in the Spring. There are a few exceptions which retain their foliage through the winter such as Heucheras, Tiarellas. and Euphorbias. Some are longer lived than others and some need staking but they are well worth the effort. There are many easy to grow varieties for beginners like Aquilegias, Astilbes and Potentillas. The wealth of varieties is so vast that there are suitable species for almost any garden situation from dry slopes and stone walls to bog gardens and stream banks. Many herbaceous plants are excellent cut flowers such as Dianthus (carnations) and Leucanthemums (daisies) and many are food sources for bees and birds.
